Chapter Eight
Syn’s fingers tightened on the steering wheel a day later when they reached the border of the werewolf territory. Already his leopard could scent them everywhere. Although he’d heard about the wolves, he’d never met one, and he wasn’t sure he wanted to now, especially when he had Dane with him. If anything were to happen to Dane, Syn knew he’d burn the West Coast to the forest floors.
“I can sense them,” Dane said as he sat up straighter. “They’re watching us.”
Syn had felt that as well.
“Maybe this is where I suggest we turn around and go home,” Dane said as he glanced around. “Adventures aren’t really my thing. So far I don’t think I’ve been very successful on this trip. I mean”—Dane laughed nervously—“Do we really need to talk to them face-to-face? Can’t you just send them an e-mail or text?”
“Unfortunately, no,” Syn answered. “In order to make Aramis an ally, we have to speak to him face-to-face.”
Maybe he should have left Dane in a nearby motel. The idea had merit, but Syn wouldn’t have felt comfortable with the man out of his sight being so close to the wolves’ border. Anything could happen. For all he knew, Imperial Guards were still following them. He couldn’t take that chance.
“When Talyn told me what we were going to do, I was nervous,” Dane said as he pressed his hands into his thighs. “Now I’m downright scared. I’m not an ambassador of good will. You saw what happened to Gabriel when he came to your home to talk to Talyn. What if they take us prisoner?”
That had worried Syn as well, but he hoped Aramis was a little more civilized than that. But then again, Talyn hadn’t been. Dane was right. His brother had kidnapped Gabriel to teach Ethan McBride a lesson. Aramis wasn’t even aware that they were coming. Maybe Syn should have thought this through a little more carefully.
He slammed on the brakes, and Dane shouted as the ass end of the car swerved. There, in the middle of the road, stood a gray wolf. The creature hadn’t moved, even though the car had come close to hitting it.
Syn had a feeling this wasn’t a wolf from the wild. He was a shifter. There was too much intelligence in his sharp blue eyes. They stared at each other for a long moment before more wolves appeared from the dense forest, staring the single car on the road.
“They’re surrounding us,” Dane whispered. “What are we going to do?”
Good question. Syn put the car in park and slowly got out, careful not to make any sudden movements. He held his hands up to show he had no weapons. “I’m here to see Alpha Aramis Bayne,” he said to the gathering wolves.
The wolf in front of the car curled its upper lip as it let out a low warning growl. He lowered his head, his ears pinned back. The other wolves followed suit, each one growling and closing in. As far
